Things going down this spring in Piper Street Sound world. Musical things I am producing: I am getting worked up about this heavy Dub track I am collaborating on with El Caballo (and with drums from Brian Daggett) Sometimes collaboration can help take you to a new place musically, or at least a place you havent been in a long time… This one is going to be wicked and heavier than much of my recent work. In another musical sphere, I am also really enjoying the cinematic music of El Güero Únicos album, which I am producing and collaborating on. Its like gorgeous, synth and guitar driven space cumbia, but not really sweaty, its kind of icy, in a good way. Complex and layered with a Jazz feeling to the chords and changes. Fall Line the third album in my de la Piedmont trilogy (under my moniker Piper Street Sound) is getting close to completion, with guest Peekaboo Streetsweeper (Sam from The Ruination and KingRat) and Damo Naimad helping me finish the final layers of instrumentation. I also invited Atlantas favorite percussionist Yaya Brown (of Dialect Trio and so much more) to read some words on the work. I also have an EP of 4 tunes I wrote that gently combines Southern US elements like rock, blues and country with Peruvian Chicha music. Its on soundcloud now and will be out on Boom One Records this summer. It is called 4 Chichas from the Piedmont (featuring Dialect Trio and El Güero Único). I am happy to be re-releasing my old dub band KingRats debut album on Boom One Records (May 5th!) took 7 years but I finally found it a home. So that leads to announce that I am close to completing the secret sophomore album from KingRat! Sounding so nice and I am glad I held on to the tracks. After producing Dub Reggae for most of a decade I have finally compiled the tracks to make up my first Piper Street Sound Dub album, itll be like my Roots of Dub/Dub from the Roots in a way, and looking like it might need to be made into a double release to fit it all. Nice to have enough versions to make albums with no filler at all. The boiled down best of. Cant wait to get that one out. Following the dub album with the first Piper Street Sound Cumbia-Dub compilation collecting my tunes that use Cumbia rhythms as a foundation then build on elements of bass music and whatever electronic production I am feeling. Not for a Dub purist but a lot of Dub fans could get down. I am for the first time in 10 years focusing on my music first this year and not that of a band I am a member of and this is allowing me to produce some more of my original Reggae compositions that have been literally sitting on the shelf and on the hard drive for years. I am on the 5th out of 10 songs utilizing the Piper Street All-Stars (who ever plays at 899 Piper Street Studios- sometimes its just me on every instrument), these songs are not Dub but rather completely original mostly instrumental tunes that seek to emulate classic Reggae. I put a focus on including some soul and funk elements so it might sound more like early Reggae than most roots recorded after 76 or so. The next single in that series Equal Lies will be ready in the next few months. I need to book a horn section for that. I am curating some releases as well like Jack Fivecoates debut album remixed. I already recieved some nice work on this project from Tony doctah X Harrington and am sure before the end of the summer we will compile some nice dubs and versions and remixes and be able to share. Working to release Peekaboo Streetsweepers debut full length too with Boom One. It is a fantastic dreamy electronic work by Sam and I hope to share it soon. Working with Boom One Sound System on an album of West African music in Dub. This is shaping up to be incredible, utilizing tracks recorded by Justin Butler of master musicians from Ghana that visited the US! As a lover of much African music (thats probably not a true statement since Africa produces so much music I havent heard and I very well may not like) this is exciting to get to work with these tracks. The first mix we did in this series utilizes traditional percussion patterns, I play an Afro-Pop bass line, Dub Reggae skanks and drum patterns and then slips into a crazy 16 bit Cumbia melodica dub! Debut single from Iyah Levi soon come. Works with Valentine Baker. Always down to record good Reggae vocalist here at my studio when I can, if you are dealing with truth and rights and not vanity. If you are in the Atlanta area contact me here in a message for this kind of session and we can work something out. Ah babies waking up from nap now! back to the grind! Gotta go.
