Things have come a long way with speech recognition in the past few years. I worked for a startup in the late 90s that developed a system that featured speech input. They used a device made by a company called verbex, connected via rs232 to a unix desktop. The verbex device had a headset and converted speech to text. It worked reasonably well but the operator had to go through a 45 minute session training the device to recognize their particular speech pattern. It was cutting edge at the time but seems really ancient compared to Google voice search using the built-in Mic on a $49 dollar phone.
