Things to unlearn from my text books: This is a direct quote taken from an article in a international communications class: By focusing on fat Americans the critics of consumptions are saying, implicitly at least, that people should consume less. They are arguing for a world in which Americans become more like the poorer countries of the world...Yet implementing such a view is a super-sized mistake. Our aspiration of the world should be to give the poor the advantages of affluence enjoyed by those in the West. Living standards such as those in Ethiopia and Niger should be, at the very least as high as those in America today. In that sense we should all aim to be fat Americans. So when you think about your world view, and what you think you know about other countries, consider the source. The USAs education system is biased, just like every other country. And if you think that fat Americans are happier than Ethiopians....well, maybe we should go to Ethiopia and see for ourselves. All I know is, if you want to have a good time, go hang out with a bunch of slum kids in the Philippines and play soccer with a ball of trash. Finally, call me captain obvious, but I dont think the planet has enough resources for every human on the planet to consume as much as we do....
