Think of writing an essay as like building a table. The markers - TopicsExpress

Think of writing an essay as like building a table. The markers want a table thats around a certain shape and size, bears a lot of weight. You dont know in advance what size table they want. Now, you can prepare a table. (Or buy one from someone else.) You can drag it into the display room and have it marked as is. Pros: its a nice table, its sturdy and reliable. Cons: its not what they asked for. Plus, youve had to carry it with you on the train on the way to the exam. And its heavy. Alternatively, you can carve one on the spot. They have raw timber and plenty of tools at the site. You just grab a log and start carving, and now you know exactly what youre aiming to build. Unfortunately, its tricky work, its taking too long, and its tiring you out. Youre getting stressed. You look across the display hall and see a girl wheeling a compact suitcase. As you watch, she opens it, and starts taking out odd-shaped pieces of carved timber. She starts making piles, putting some of them into one pile, and tossing others casually aside into another. She starts propping them up against each other, and starts assembling them into a table. Before you even know what youre seeing, shes built a table, out of pre-fab parts she picked out of her briefcase when she arrived, joining them together with just a power drill and a few well-placed screws. Disclaimer: I have never built a table and I dont know shit about woodwork. Thoughts on the analogy?
