Think you know the Mentawais? Think again... Every year we come to feast from the seemingly bottomless buffet of watery delights for which the Mentawai Islands is famous for, and who wouldnt want to chase ridiculously perfect barreling waves? Its what we come to Indo for right? Well sometimes its nice to mix it up and fortunately for us at Kingfisher Bay Resort weve discovered a tasty little treat in the form of a super fun and totally empty beach break just a short boat ride from the resort. What better way to add some spice to a surf trip than letting loose on 3 to 4 foot, bath tub warm peelers. As awesome as the reef breaks in this part of the world are, and they are flipping awesome, surfing on top of sand creates a whole different vibe thats maybe not so serious or as intense - just pure fun. Thats not to say we havent been scoring with the usual suspects; Lances Left, Hts, Bintangs etc... Theyve all been firing at one time or another, sometimes simultaneously, sometimes wearing an XL outfit, sometimes with Jamie OBrien shredding the place apart when wearing its XL dress (killing it with his spear gun as well ...literally). It has been a season with an elephant sized s#&t load of variety when it comes to waves, and with the discovery of this new beachie we have access to the kind of waves not normally associated with surfing in the Mentawai Islands. So next time maybe pack your little hotdog board or fish, the Mentawais still has a few dishes you may not have tried yet.
