Thinking a bout this the other day; I was able to realise why theres such a nursing shortage now... the answer is feminism... Ill tell you why... Im old enough to remember when there were jobs for ladies and different jobs for men...For little girls: it was school teacher, secretary (so you could hopefully marry the boss one day, or at least find a husband in your place of work), stewardess, (like being a rock star in 1970) or NURSE... Millions of little girls wanted to be nurses... It ticked all those caring nurturing instincts and was an essential service.. Nurse saved lives, helped people, were responsible good citizen etc... Fast forward a few decades, whats happened? Our society went from lots of little girls wanting to be nurses to almost none.. Candy stripers were lke junior nurses-in-training that a high school girl could doon her way inyo a career in nursing... my baby-sitters were candy-stripers, i vaguely remember wanting to do it... then feminism came along, with its characteristic devaluing of anything and everything traditionally associated with women... BE A DOCTOR! Why be a silly old nurse??? Be a BOSS, get your own secretary! Be a pilot! Drive the damn plane yourself! All great messages and now, you do see lady doctors, lawyers, judges, cops, pilots etc...(maybe not so many garbage ladies, but you know..) So progress, cool.. But at what cost?A great many more fields are open to women, but why, oh why does the NHS need to hire foreign nurses from abroad? where are the native nurses? Did becoming a nurse become so unfashionable that traditional occupations for girls like nursing are now reliant on overseas outsourced talent, rather than homegrown? Come to think of it, i cant remember the last time I heard a little girl express any desire to be a nurse... Pop star, forensic scientist/detective, actor, yes... I fear this generation will produce mostly hair and makeup artists... :/
