Thinking about the flu shot tonight...the fierce little girl in the first pic is my great grandma Lula. Just before this photo her mother, newborn sister, 1 year old brother, and grandfather all died in a 2 week span in the flu epidemic of 1919. Of the six remaining children, only she and her brother Roy (in the back) escaped the flu without significant brain damage. Her dad was able to keep them (temporarily) and my uncle Buford on the left, who was mentally handicapped from the flu. The second picture is the photo that was taken the day he turned the three more severely mentally handicapped children over to the state. My grandmother eventually got Aunt Edna back and spent the rest of her life caring for both Edna and Buford. The two little boys Granville and Andrew lived institutionalized until they passed in the 90s. Take a close look into the eyes of this little family and remember what an epidemic looked like before we had vaccinations. Modern medicine might not be as dangerous as the flu.
