Thinking about what it means to be shaped into His image as I - TopicsExpress

Thinking about what it means to be shaped into His image as I ponder this verse: And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lords glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Cor. 3:18. If were honest, wed have to confess that we spend a lot of time trying to shape people into our own images. We might not like to admit it, but we do. Ive had zillions of people over the years try to tell me what I should eat or not eat (based on their own eating plan), what medications I should or should not take (based on their theories/beliefs), how I should dress and/or wear my hair (based on their likes/dislikes, current trends), etc. etc. etc. Well-meaning people offer advice so freely. I think it comes most naturally to women, especially moms, because were used to doling out instructions to our kids. But, why do we do this to our friends and loved ones? Are we really trying to help, or is there something deeper going on? (Side note: Im NOT talking about confronting someone whos facing life/death struggles/addictions. I definitely think theres a time/place for interventions. Im referring only to seemingly superfluous things.) I dont think we realize were trying to shape people into our image, but many times thats the case. Im as guilty as the next guy/gal, trust me, so Im preaching to the choir here. Again, I ask: Why do we do this? Perhaps, for self-validation. If we can convince others that our way is best, if we can get them to follow in our footsteps with health advice, life advice, romance advice, hair styles, wardrobe changes, home decor, etc. etc. etc. then weve won over a convert. It feels good to be a leader, and even better if the follower does what we say. How much better would it be if we focused on shaping ourselves into the image of Christ-being transformed into His image? Then we could (gasp!) love on others and encourage them, so that HE could speak to their hearts about changes that need to take place. If theres any shaping to be done, Hes perfectly capable of whispering (or shouting) to the human heart. He might not need our help. Just something to chew on this fine morning. (And no, no one did anything to me to provoke all of these thoughts.)
