Thinking carefully: The Walled Garden A walled garden is a closed ecosystem. Walled gardens are common in communities that cannot tolerate dissent or which have a strong resistance to outside input. On the net, a walled garden refers to a closed circle of pages, which reference only each other. In cults, a walled garden appears where there is pressure for adherents to only associate with fellow likeminded members and to cut off contact with dissenting family and others who might be sources of differing views than the group’s teachings. In propaganda and governments, a walled garden appears when it is discouraged or illegal to access news sources outside approved channels. In pseudo-science a walled garden appears when a group only cites each others non-peer-reviewed journals.
