Third Story: So I worked at the Flint Public Library for about 23 years. I loved working there and especially being down in the stacks. What a wonderful scary place. But anyway, one of my jobs at the Library was to drive the Library Book Mobile. Now this was no easy task. It was a huge vehicle, similar to those you see on the highway used by vacationers. I never really like driving it, but I did not have a choice. Whenever Larry was not there, I was given the job. The Library administration should have known better than to put me and Leslie (one of the librarians) on that van together. We were both animal lovers. We always went into Flints poorer neighborhoods and so there were so many stray dogs it drove me absolutely crazy. But one afternoon we are sitting at Martin School and waiting for patrons to come on board. Leslie and I notice a young boy with a beautiful German Shepherd. We were only there a few minutes when the boy came over to the book mobile and the dog followed him. We asked him if the dog was his and he replied he was not, it is a stray dog. He had been hanging around his house for several days. Leslie and I both looked at each other and said oh no. We knew at that moment we were in deep trouble. So I got on my cell phone and called my husband and asked him if I could possibly bring home this beautiful dog. He yelled at me and emphatically said no, dont you bring home another dog. I almost knew before I called what his answer would be. So, I did not let that deter me, I started calling everyone I knew, asking them to take this wonderful dog. Of course there was no one to take him. Well we stayed at Martin School for about 2 hours. It was soon time to go and Leslie looked at me and said, Well Glenda do we take him or leave him? Oh my god I was in turmoil. I made a quick decision and said We take him. So this beautiful shepherd rode around with us the rest of the afternoon and we tried to hide him in the back of the book mobile when patrons came on board. My husband usually picked me up from work as he worked in downtown Flint and I worked at the cultural center. I got out at 5:30 and he got out at 5 pm. So he was sitting in the parking lot waiting for me as I drove the book mobile back to the Library. You can only imagine how scared I was to get out of that book mobile with this big Shepherd following behind me. My husband was a great guy, but at that moment he looked like he was ready to explode. So I got off the book Mobile with Martin (that is what we named him) and Martin got into the car with me. My husband was very angry, but do you know by the time we got home to Swartz Creek he had calmed down. Martin was such a sweetheart and my husband could not remain angry for long. Martin started out in the kennel in the barn, but within a few days he came into the house. I will never forget that beautiful dog. He loved other dogs, and cats and he eventually was adopted by Leslie, the librarian that went with me that day.
