Third Sunday of Lent Today’s Gospel reading is another - TopicsExpress

Third Sunday of Lent Today’s Gospel reading is another “encounter story” from St John’s Gospel. Last week we read of Nicodemus meeting Jesus; today it is the turn of the Samaritan woman. The passage, though simply written, is incredibly rich theologically, indeed better suited to a bible study than this column. So what might we make of it in terms of our prayer? So leave aside all the theological significance of Jesus’ gift of the water of eternal life and his comments on his lack of need of food and the imminence of the harvest and ask yourself what might God be asking of you and offering to you. The passage speaks to me about being met where I am at (Jesus accepts the woman for whom she is), she gains a greater insight into who she is and in that meeting she makes a response (the woman goes and tells others, who then also were able to meet Jesus). So out of this encounter comes both belief and blessing. Lord, just as the Samaritan woman was blessed in her encounter with Jesus, may I in my encounters today be both blessed and a blessing to others. Amen. Peter Haughton
