Thirteen years ago, I was a young, eager 23 year old staffer working my dream-job in the Capitol Building. I had arrived very early that morning to for a breakfast meeting and several hearings that were to take place. Ill never forget watching the first and then second planes hit the World Trade Center. Ill never forget that I was told about the pentagon by a four star general, who had no idea if anyone in his office was still alive. Ill never forget calling the Capitol police, and hearing them scream in the background to evacuate the Capitol. Ill never forget the feeling of running out of the Capitol, certain that it would explode behind me. Ill never forget trying to find a safe place to stay and borrowing someones landline to call my mom to tell her I was ok. We spent the rest of that day in a basement on Capitol Hill until we could safely get home. Once we got home, we had a sickening view of the pentagon, which continued to burn for days. And on Sept. 12th, we got up, got dressed and went back into work. Perhaps the most difficult steps Ive ever taken. And finally, Ill never forget the heroes aboard flight 93 that saved my life by sacrificing their own. If it werent for the flight delay and their heroic actions, I dont believe I would be here. I owe my life and my childrens lives to them. We said, We will never forget!, but sadly many have. I never will. I never will forget.
