Thirteen years ago today it was my first day with a new preschool class at Dodge Nature Preschool. As parents were dropping off they started to mention what was happening across our country. As curious as I was, I decided to tune out the rest of the world during that school day and focus solely on making sure the kids had a great first day of school despite what was happening elsewhere. I hoped these kids wouldnt hear about the news…just too hard to grasp and so scary for young kids (and for us too, really!). My job was to help them know their world was safe so they could continue to grow in their confidence and be who theyre meant to be. Most of the kids continued to know nothing about what had happened and continued to live life as they always had…free. It was so peaceful to come to work each day knowing that I got to spend my time with such innocence and could forget for short periods of time that such awfulness does exist in the world. These kids are now in their junior or senior years of high school now and are certainly well aware of the dangers of the world. Hopefully as theyre thinking back to what they were doing 13 years ago today, theyre remembering their first day of preschool and we all had together.
