Thirty years ago today, I participated in the invasion of the island nation of Grenada as a Marine helicopter pilot aboard the USS Guam. We were on our way to Beirut, Lebanon to relieve elements of the Eighth Marines, 241 of whom had been killed in a Hezbollah terrorist bombing just two days before. It was probably the most intense period of my life and has rarely been far from my memory ever since. We lost three of my fellow pilots that week and many more Navy SEALS and Army soldiers. Despite what many may have heard, when we got to Grenada, we faced a full regiment of Cuban regulars masquerading as construction workers who were there to carry out a murderous coup of the legitimate government of Grenada. But thanks to America, Grenada is thriving today as a free nation, and a tourist hot spot! The 15,000 foot runway that was built at Salinas to land Russian Backfire bombers so they could easily reach US targets, now offloads plane loads of tourists to enjoy its peaceful sandy beaches and azure waters. Thank God for President Reagan! He didnt get everything right, but he had the courage to do what it took to save that tiny nation, and in so doing, he protected America! I know first hand from many that thanked me personally that the Christians on the island had been praying for two years that God would send America to save them from communist overthrow. God answers prayer and He saves nations! Remember the fallen and keep praying! Our turn is coming! Semper Fi!
