This Alert is to advise you of changes to the Road Rule 307-2 which relates to motor breakdown vehicles and tow trucks using breakdown lanes. View this email in your browser Tow Truck Alert Effective from 1 August 2014 Roads and Maritime Services wish to advise that in accordance with the NSW Breakdown Safety Strategy there have been recent changes to the NSW Road Rules 2008. The changes provide for motor breakdown vehicles and tow trucks to use the breakdown lanes or shoulders of roads on freeways and roads with a speed limit of at least 80km/h. This came into affect on 1 August 2014. Rule 307-2 now allows motor breakdown vehicles and tow trucks who are proceeding to the scene of a crash or breakdown to travel in the breakdown lane or shoulder of a freeway or roads with a speed limit of at least 80km/h, under the following strict conditions: The motor breakdown service vehicle or tow truck must: Not exceed a speed of 30km/h when travelling in the breakdown lane or shoulder Only travel in the breakdown lane or shoulder when it is safe to do so Only travel in the breakdown lane or shoulder when proceeding to the scene of a crash or broken down vehicle Display a flashing amber light when travelling in the breakdown lane or shoulder Give way to any emergency vehicles in the breakdown lane or shoulder Only travel in the same direction in the lane or shoulder as other traffic on that stretch of road. Drivers are reminded to be aware of other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists which may be in the breakdown lane or shoulder. This amendment to the Road Rules makes it possible for motor breakdown vehicles and tow trucks to access incidents sooner in congested situations.
