This CNN poll reflects what I see at the front porch of homes throughout the District. Among the most powerful statements Ive heard along the campaign trail was at a Sons of Italy Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser, earlier this year. One of the volunteers pulled me aside and said, Ken, I am 73 years old and I dont recognize the country I grew up in! Ive heard this same sentiment voiced in many different ways. But... the bottom line is that people are worried about the future, for themselves and for their kids. This is why, during this campaign, I decided to tell the story of my familys history as they fled communism and the Berlin Wall. My father came here and started his own landscaping business, a one-man operation. He always thought of himself as just and average Joe, living in a very exceptional country. The proudest moment of his life came when he raised his right hand and swore his oath to become a Citizen of the USA. As many of you know, my life is recently book-ended by another immigration story with the arrival, from Ecuador, of Liam Kenneth Horn. One of the questions Im trying to answer with this election is... as Liam grows up, will he have the same great opportunities that my father had when he arrived here in 1958? If I can answer this question for Liam, I answer it for all of our children. So... while we may be frustrated, sad or angry about the direction of our country... believe me... the American Dream is not lost... especially here in Michigan. As far as Im concerned... this isnt about Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians or the Green Party, any longer. Freedom and opportunity, as my dad saw it, are still right here at our fingertips, but… these gifts need to be fought for and preserved… for each generation. Every child should strive to find a better life than their parents had. Lets give them the help, the hope and encouragement they need. In the meantime… God Bless America!
