This Christmas I was spared from tears, just one year ago Layla had just finished her radiation, this as we thought was the beginning of healing for Layla but as the new year started we where faced with yet more challenges. Layla got sick, had a spinal shunt, She lost her ability to walk, the light faded from her eyes she went from 11kg to 14,6kg and funny how during winter she managed miss getting the flu. She had just one day back at school and has not been back since. Just after the ball Layla fell sick again, we took her in and after a few visits to the hospital after a few tests we discovered what exactly RADIATION can do to a child. Layla now has a hole in her ear, she now has an ulcer in her stomach ( caused by the medication to help stop the swelling so she cant come off of it either) she has 6 abnormal vertebra, she needs stints for her legs and a few more visits to the doctors in January. In 2013 we raised R1.2 million rand for Layla to get the Proton treatment, this we were unable to do but this. In Laylas honor I started Ependy Angels a non profit organisation, Kept the money in thereand it did help cover the R600000 in medical bills and treatment for 2013 and this year we covered her expenses of R360 000. Thank you to each person who was able to donate and help us support Layla in all her needs. We also managed to put family on medical aid who in return had a young girl get the treatment she needed with a healthy family around her to give her a fighting chance, Raising hope for Anna-Marie Tewitz. Ependy Angels has helped make a difference. Somepart of me feels had she just got the proton would she have had all these side affects? Now I have come across another young girl Emma De Vries who is just 21 months old and has medullastoma a cancer growing so fast around her brain stem and now they have found more leading into her spine. This is close to home and Emmas parents have been accepted into a PROTON center in Tennessee, they have started the process of a second dose of chemo for Emma and will be able to go for Proton late February /early March. Now I may not have been able to save Layla completely and yes Layla has been declared terminal but there is still hope for Emma. On Laylas behalf she will be donating R150 000 towards Emmas Proton treatment with this she still needs another R150000 if anyone would like to help spare this family from my journey please donate into the Ependy Angels account reference Emma and lets see if we can save her . Ependy Angels Npc FNB Acc: 62431847352 Branch code 250655 Reference Emma. Please note for any corporates that would like to donate we do have a section 18 A certificate. We have been blessed with a year with Layla so I would like to bless the De Vries family with a new year and beginnings for Emma . She deserves a chance to live.
