This Day In Music: 1969: Day 1 of the 3 day festival The Woodstock - TopicsExpress

This Day In Music: 1969: Day 1 of the 3 day festival The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was held. Tickets for the three-day event cost $18 in advance and $24 at the gate (equivalent to $112.70 and $150.30 in 2013). The concert was originally scheduled to take place in the 300-acre Mills Industrial Park in the town of Wallkill, New York, but town residents immediately opposed the project, so the organizers contracted Max Yasgurs 600 acre farm in Bethel. Bethel is actually 43 miles southwest of Woodstock but the festival was called such because the organizers home base, Woodstock Ventures was there. The first day officially began at 5:07 p.m. with Richie Havens, followed by Swami Satchidananda (who gave the invocation for the festival), Sweetwater, Bert Sommer, Tim Hardin, Ravi Shankar, Melanie Safka, Arlo Guthrie, and closing the day at 2 AM was Joan Baez. youtu.be/3bxf2X4zP5k
