Monday August 5, 2013 1960 - (Upper Volta) Burkina Faso in Africa gains its independence from France. 1968 - Edward William Brooke ~ given (temporary) Chairman title for the Republican National Convention. 1984 - Edwin Moses ~ wins gold medal in Olympics track & field. 1984 - Evelyn Ashford ~ wins gold medal in Olympics track & field. 1900 - James Augustine Healy ~ first black bishop (Roman Catholic Church) in the U.S. dies. 1864 - Black gunman, John Lawson, and landsman, William Brown, who fought on the flagship USS Hartford, both won the Congressional Medal of Honor for courage in the Battle of Mobile Bay. 1928 - William A Scott, III founded the Atlanta Daily World. It became the first contemporary Black daily newspaper. 1966 - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was stoned during a Chicago, IL march against discrimination.
