This Day in History: Dwight Eisenhower is born near Abilene, Texas, later to go on to a military career starting at West Point, then subsequently rising to command all Allied forces during World War II and elected President for two terms, 1890; Progressive Bull Moose Party candidate Teddy Roosevelt is shot in the chest as he begins a campaign speech, the bullet being largely stopped a small book holding his notes, the candidate going on to complete the speech despite his wounds, 1912; Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager- a hero who served valiantly during the Second World War- breaks the sound barrier, beginning a new era in flight, 1947; the Cuban Missile Crisis begins, after President Kennedy is alerted to the presence of missile silos 93 miles from the U.S. mainland in Cuba, sending the world to the brink of nuclear war, 1962; the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. wins the Nobel Peace Prize for his work spreading a policy of non-violence while helping to fully integrate our society in the United States, 1964 https://youtube/watch?v=H5ZzL9KsyPY
