This Day in Mickey Mantle History: Aug. 31, 1961: Mickey (3-for-4, 2 runs, 1 rbi, stolen base) belts a righty homer that slices just inside the foul pole in left at Metropolitan Stadium vs. the Twins for homer #48. Afterward he says to Roger Maris, “Well, I beat my man, now it’s up to you.” The Mick was referring to Lou Gehrig’s 47 homers when he and Babe Ruth combined for a record 107 homers by teammates in 1927.
