This Day in Mickey Mantle History: Sept. 1, 1963: After an all-night party in Baltimore Mickey unexpectedly comes off the disabled list a day early. He’s asked to pinch-hit in the eighth. Whitey Ford says “Swing at the first fastball.” O’s coach Hank Bauer tells his pitcher “Throw strikes. He’s in no condition to hit.” On the first pitch Mickey belts a long 2-run homer. He laughs as he rounds the bases, and NY goes on to win 5-4 in Charm City. #mickeymantle
