This Friday Jan 9, 7PM ~Chicago Astronomical Society invites you to a free lecture at the Adler Planetarium. The Chicago Astronomical Society presents Comets: Our Solar Systems Icy Messengers. by Michelle Nichols, Master Educator, Adler Planetarium Icy comets are a hot topic these days! Well take a peek at some historic comets, find out what we (currently) know about comets, and well look ahead to Comet Lovejoy (C2014 Q2), which is 2015s first likely naked-eye comet! Comet Lovejoy (C2014 Q2) was discovered in August 2014. The closest pass to Earth is on January 7, 2015, and perihelion is January 30, so this comet is expected to brighten even more. It wont return for another pass for about 8,000 years, so you wont want to miss your chance to see & share it! About our speaker: Michelle Nichols , Master Educator for NASA Forum Programs at The Adler Planetarium, has been doing an absolutely fabulous job at the Adler for over 15 years. Weve heard her interview lately on the NPR, and shes been a friendly-face liaison with CAS for many of Adlers public outreach events. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum & Instruction from National-Louis University. Ms. Nichols previous experience includes positions at U.S. Space Camp, the Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, and the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium in Cocoa, Florida. At the Adler Planetarium, Ms. Nichols has been a member of staff teams to develop, implement, and evaluate planetarium shows, exhibits, special educational events, sky observing events, teacher workshops, floor demonstrations and activities, volunteer training programs, and more, programs that have collectively served hundreds of thousands of casual visitors, school groups, and others. The topics of these programs have ranged from astronomy and physics, the history of astronomy, space exploration and manned spaceflight. ------------- Dave Fuller will offer a 15-minute presentation before our keynote speaker, Michelle Nichols. David Fuller, CAS member and host of the Eyes on the Sky videos will go over whats up in the night sky this month, sharing the coming months brightest stars and constellations that are visible in the evening sky. Additionally, objects easily seen through a telescope and or binoculars even through light polluted skies will be highlighted, along with upcoming celestial events to observe. For this meeting, if the skies are clear, Dave will bring along a small telescope to share views of Comet Lovejoy C2014 Q2. Feel free to bring your own binoculars if you like. ------------ Please join us for what promises to be very interesting presentations at the Adler Planetarium on November 14th at 7:00pm. Enter at the south entrance. To enter the Museum Campus, you must exit Lake Shore Drive at 18th street and follow the winding road around Soldier Field to the Planetarium. Street parking is available. Parking rates are $2.00 per hour, payable at the parking kiosks. The parking lot may also be open, but usually costs $16. Or use the CTA. Red, Green and Orange Rapid Transit Trains cross Roosevelt Road (12th Street.) Now only the #146 Bus goes to the Adler Planetarium. Instead of turning on Balbo, southbound #146 service will remain on State until Roosevelt and will then make a stop at the Red, Green and Orange line station before continuing on to the Museum Campus. This will replace service previously provided by #12 Roosevelt buses. CAS General Meetings are held the 2nd Friday each month, usually at the Adler Planetarium, unless there is a Bears game or concert at the Museum Campus area. In these cases, we move the meetings to Cernan Space Center or other suitable locations. Please follow our CAS website or fb page for meeting updates for this and other CAS activities. Guests are always welcomed at no charge. Doors open at 6:40 P.M. If you have questions about this meeting, feel free to email [email protected]. Hope to see you!
