This International End Obstetric Fistula Day calls for an end to the suffering of 2 million women...women like Sarah who is a 32yr old woman with a beautiful smile. She is a patient admitted at the AWC, awaiting surgery for VVF repair as she leaks urine continuously. Sarah grew up in a family of 6 in Sierra Leone. Her parents were farmers & she was the only girl with 3 brothers. At age 14yrs, she got married to an older man who already had 3 wives. She stayed married to him for 5yrs before she ended the marriage & returned to her parents because she was not happy. Soon after, she became the 2nd wife to another man. She lived with this new husband for 9yrs before conceiving early 2012. Sarah attended the ANC at the local health centre in her village during the course of her pregnancy. Late in her pregnancy, she was advised by the midwife at her clinic to see a doctor at the “big hospital” as she might need an operation to deliver her baby. She told her husband & he refused to take her to the doctor or to pay transportation for her. He told her that if his other wife and female relatives were able to give birth normally, so could she. A few weeks later, Sarah went into labour. The local birth attendant was called to aid her. But after 2 days of painful labour, Sarah had still not been able to deliver & by that time the baby had stopped moving. MORE OF SARAHS STORY TO FOLLOW #EndFistula
