This Is How The White House Celebrates Diwali There are only a few achievements that former American President George Bush take credit for - one of them is starting the White Houses Diwali celebrations in 2003. For the last few years, this duty has been upheld by the Obama family. In 2009, Barack Obama was the first to light a traditional lamp in the presidential home’s East Room. A year later, his wife Michelle also spoke on Diwali night from the White House about the festival message of togetherness, pretty much summing it up for Americans!: This holiday is celebrated by members of some of the worlds oldest religions not just here in America but across the globe. Diwali is a time for celebration... As Barack and I learned during our visit to India, its a time to come together with friends and family, often with dancing and good food, Last years Diwali saw a performance by American indie-rock band Goldspot, which is fronted by Indian Siddhartha Khosla. Michelle was the first to bring Bollywood moves to the White House in a ‘Dance Clinic’ with Nakul Dev Mahajan, Indian-American dancer and choreographer from the dance talent show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’. She also lit a diya amid chants of Vedic mantras. White House employees also took part in the lighting of diyas and prayers. Courtesy: IndiaTimes
