This Is My Story: “Walking On Water” Written by: Recognize Chris Ringo How do you document the journey of greatness? You post it. In 1997, a young man dreamt snippets of future events. There was no roadmap or complete details drawn out… just flashes of things promised. Like the disciples in the parable of seeing Jesus walk on water, I set sail on life. The experiences had me far out from the land of familiarity. March of 2007, I began gainful employment located downtown Chicago as a Corporate Security Officer. November of 2007, I was introduced to a lovely lady named: Urban Literature. I was a hard sell. I fought desperately to resist her allure. Reading “Hoodwinked” by Quentin Carter had her claws treading my back. The marks left an impression of burning desire to court her world. Do you have faith to walk on water? It’ll cost you. During my time as Security (3/2007- 8/2011), I read to write, taught myself photoshop and develop a love for photography. August of 2011, the passion for writing and photography had me step out on water; leaving a steady paycheck for the fulfillment of dreams deferred. Initial steps on water had confidence and great expectations within its imprint. Upon further movement from the ship (familiarity), I lost it all… two cars, apartment, etc. Strength to endure came in the form of NEVER losing sight of the dreams. Often recalling the words of my cousin, Marlon Gresham (R.I.P), I championed preparation time. Our year of hustling in Michigan from ’05- ’06… he’d repeatedly remind me, “As long as you have product, you’ll have money.” June 6, 2006, I lost my cousin to gun violence; gunned down by another man squeezing the trigger of my cousin’s 40 cal. Adding insult to injury, his children watched as he took his last breath. Do you have faith to walk on water? I lean back on this difficult time because I had a choice to make. I, in heart, wanted to revenge my cousin. I knew the guy who committed the crime. Street code called for me move swift with retribution. However, my father… challenged me. His wise counsel suggested the best revenge being success. Do I have faith to walk on water? I do! I’ve had premature ideas to publish my novels. Yet, I was blessed enough at being my own hardest critic. This self affliction has kept me steadfast on presenting the literary world with the BEST of me. The year of 2013, it proved my heart by the tests I faced. I regret nothing. In fact, I thank those who embraced me as well as those who rejected me. My competitive nature was inspired by the events of love and betrayal. Do I believe in walking on water? Of course, I’m doing it. In 2014, my journey will surface full circle. From January to November, you’ll have visible proof of my walk. Have you taken notice of seven… 1997, 2007… 2014? I was shown in 1997 where I’d arrive in 2014… 2007 would be the road to get me there. Walk on water people. It’s your story.
