This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now, screams from the speakers. Musically, it sounds nothing like U2 -- and yet, it is. Im not a fan of U2. I havent actively listened to them in years. I treat their previous album like it never existed. Im as cynical as music fans get, and still, I gave the new record a spin. Im intrigued, though not a convert... yet. This new record represents an evolution for the band, a step forward that theyve thus been unwilling to take. Songs of Innocence isnt a band pointlessly scrambling to maintain (or regain) cultural relevance. Its a band who couldnt care less about what you think. Theyre making music for themselves, fully divorced from the past. Everybody has different musical tastes, I get that, but dont dismiss a band without listening to the record in full. And even if you dont like the sound after a full listen, dont diss the artists behind it. Respect the passion and work, thats the least you can do.
