This Sat 1st Feb from 10-11am, speakers at the Shark Rally, Meelup - TopicsExpress

This Sat 1st Feb from 10-11am, speakers at the Shark Rally, Meelup Beach will inform local ocean-goers on the implications & alternatives to the current shark policy. WHY? The catch & kill policy does not stand up either on public safety or on environmental grounds. 1) SAFETY: There is no scientific proof that culling will lead to a decrease in shark-human accidents. Baited drum-lines 1km out (close to many surf breaks) are also likely to attract large sharks closer inshore. 2) ENVIRONMENT: Drum-lines are indiscriminate and destroy other non-target marine life (including smaller sharks, large fish, dolphins, turtles etc.) Sharks are also a keystone species, crucial to our marine ecosystem. Speakers include (Q&A available after rally for questions): * Professor Jessica Meeuwig - Director of Centre for Marine Futures UWA * Blair Darvill - Community Engagement & Coast Care Consultant * MC - Richard Todd - award-winning underwater cinematographer This rally is intended to be informative, peaceful & apolitical. Also featuring facepainting for the kids & a fun photoshoot... so wear blue & white, bring a placard & your board!
