This Saturdays Sailing Center Chesapeake gathering starts at 5 PM at SMSA. Bring a dish for a pot luck supper that should begin about 6 PM. Afterward, Hugh Donald, grandson of Robert Bavier, Sr., will lead us in the documentary described below. Ive seen a preview, and the footage and photos are spectacular in this well-done production. See you there, and Happy New Year! A SAILING FAMILY A SAILING FAMILY is a documentary featuring Robert N. Bavier,Sr.,a leading pioneer of yacht racing in the first half of the twentieth century, who was called by his son, The Best Racing Skipper I know. Co-featured are his two children: Robert N.Bavier, Jr. an internationally recognized yachtsman, who was President and Publisher of YACHTING Magazine, author of seven books on sailing, and a 2012 Inductee into the National Sailing Hall of Fame; and Margery Bavier Donald, who won the Long Island Sound Womens Championship, the Chesapeake Bay Womens Championship, and was a very successful skipper in Cruising Class Divisions on the Chesapeake. A SAILING FAMILY was made by professional videographer and documentarian, Joe Stephens, narrator, with information provided by Hugh and Keith Donald and their cousin, Louise Bavier. All of the viewing material is from family collections. The foundation of the documentary is 16 mm movie film shot on one camera by the family. That is supplemented by old photographs (amateur and professional), old newspapers, magazines, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and current interviews. A SAILING FAMILY includes teaching, cruising, and racing. Most of the action takes place between 1924 and 1964, but the family is traced from its sailing origins in the 19th century . Highlighted in the documentary are: -Bermuda Race victories (RNB, Sr.); -Americas Cup footage, RNB Sr.,Tactician of J-Boat Weetamoe in1930 and RNB Jr., Skipper of 12-Meter Constellation in 1964; -Start of the 1931 TransAtlantic Race with Dorade and Highland Light; -Beginnings of Severn Sailing Association in Round Bay, Severna Park and Eastport, Annapolis.
