This Sunday’s gospel: Matthew 14:13-21 | After John the Baptist is murdered, Jesus desires a time of solitude. Still, his compassion for others will not allow him to dismiss those who need him, and he is moved to perform one of his greatest miracles ¶ World of the Bible note: 14:13-21 Jesus . . . withdrew . . . to a deserted place . . . those who ate were about five thousand: See Mark 6:30- 44. The crowd follows Jesus into the desert. In compassion, Jesus heals them and feeds them in a feast that anticipates God’s salvation (see Isa 35), in contrast with Herod’s birthday feast (14:6). Where Jesus is, there is plenty, even in the desert.(From “Lutheran Study Bible,” Augsburg Fortress, 2009.)
