This Weeks Wednesday Classic: October by U2 Forget a pinch & a punch ... October is an eery and beautiful song with simple lyrics as appropriate for 2014 with ISIS and umbrella revolutions as for 1983 with IRA and the Berlin Wall: October and the trees are stripped bear of all they wear - what do I care? October. And kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall but you go on and on. October is the only song on U2 1980-1990 from the album October, and it appears as a ghost track. The album is widely regarded as one of the bands weakest, a sympotom of second album fever. It is perhaps their most obviously Christian album and was recorded when some members of the band were wondering if their faith & being in a band could be reconciled. Bono lost his lyrics which explains why several songs dont have many. But Ive always loved the album because it showcases Bonos amazing voice like no other. Scarlet is a favourite of mine in that regard. The song October has the unique privilege of being the only U2 song I can authentically play solo. Back in 1983, U2 were widely praised for their passion & commitment for releasing a live album from Red Rocks at a discounted price - because they didnt take a cut from the sales. They just wanted more people to hear their music. Fair to say it worked. Same deal 30 years later with a music distributor causes hysterical backlash. For some reason people love to say I loved their early stuff about any band they knew before they get bigger - as if its a crime to succeed. Bands come & go. U2 have gone on & on; their new song cedar wood road the match of anything played at Red Rocks. https://youtube/watch?v=590ljQM08H0
