This absolutely breaks my heart. A young girls comes to the U.S., hoping to be saved from her sad life in Ethiopia, only to be MURDERED by her Christian fundamentalist parents who follow the tenets of To Train Up a Child, which unabashedly advocates for and teaches how to beat and break children. I know Im in the minority here (especially amongst my Southern friends, who like me were spanked/beaten), but you should NEVER. HIT. A. CHILD. NEVER! When you justify your lazy form of punishment by saying, Theres a difference between spanking and beating, and Theres a difference between punishment and abuse, or My parents spanked me, and I turned out just fine, you are blatantly ignoring the fact that there is NO clear line between those things; every individual will draw that line at a different place. When you cop to such ignorant, boorish parenting methods, you are not only teaching your child to react rather than reflect, you are permitting -- ADVOCATING for, in fact -- abuse like this to happen -- abuse that leads to death. Unless and until more parents rise to the occasion to be better than this and teach children that true love does NOT, in fact, ever have to hurt, this will continue to happen again and again and again. #sorrynotsorry
