This actually points directly to one of the best reasons to appreciate Darwinism over religions and cultures. When everything is hidden and fake there will always be the argument of seeing the inner beauty of someone rather than their physical beauty. However, our interpretations of the world around us are genetically programmed to admire and gravitate toward symmetry....often that symmetry is represented as well being, health and vitality in the creature world. Just like a peacock has its feathers to attract a mate we have our traits that have been developed over time to show off health, intelligence and strength...among many others, some not so easily seen. As cruel as it might sound to allow nature to take its course, it is necessary. The kicker to this story might be the fact that the bride was not unattractive at all, but did not fit the preconceived notions of what she would/should look like to the groom...he expected true love, but flinched. The other kicker would be that this was his only way to buck the system of these stupid arranged weddings. ;) I must also present more information on attraction...pupils tend to dilate when people are looking at people they are attracted to...this allows in more light in to increase the accuracy of the brains interpretation of the physical characteristics. There are also pheromones that are released when the eyes see what they like...intensifying the attraction...those pheromones are picked up on a unconscious level. Love is a little more scientific than the average arranged married couple would like to believe or have been told. I can understand how hiding or changing the physical appearance of ones self could be a turn off in and of itself. Since the main reason for procreation is the prodigy that is produced...any misinterpretations would show up in the blood line eventually. There was actually a supposed case where a man sued his ex wife for his ugly children.[ snopes/media/notnews/uglybaby.asp ] Apparently she had entered the relationship as a beautiful woman, but was not born one....her mistake was that she did not tell him. She had had so much work done that the before and after were clearly different people. Had she warned him would things have been different? Who knows? Regardless of the validity of the story we humans tend to fall in love with the whole of a person...and that includes outer beauty. And both inner and outer beauty lies with in the perspective of the beholder. When beauty is hidden behind veils or make up...or even an arranged marriage...it stifles true love.
