This ad did the rounds a few days ago because Mine Baird, the Premier of NSW, appears in it promoting Murdoch rag The Daily Telegraph; hence destroying the last tissue-thin shred of pretense that News Ltd and the Liberal Party arent corruptly and incestuously intertwined. But what I find a lot more concerning is the fact that the Daily Telegraph app apparently induces full-blown schizophrenic hallucinations. According to the commercial, just a few swipes will plunge the user into Datura-style psychosis, a salmon-riddled waking nightmare where youre constantly surrounded by hordes of hack tabloid journalists only you can see, grinning at your every thought and waggling their eyebrows suggestively. This Elysium of trollumnists might seem okay – at least you wont be alone any more – but when youre sobbing from insomnia because Andrew Bolt and Miranda Devine are at the end of your bed, always watching, always smiling, youll wish youd never leapt from the nigh-unscalable cliffs of reality.
