This afternoon my wife and I went to pay our last respects to the man who married us, supported my entry into theological studies, preached at my father, his friends funeral in a Methodist Church, and supportive of my vocation as a Christian communicator. Not being able to attend the Resurrection Mass tomorrow, we thought we would attend the Vigil Mass or join my wifes old parish of Lautoka in their midnight vigil. As we drove past the Sacred Heart Cathedral we saw the crowds gathered and thought to ourselves, as long as we are outside somewhere and watch on the big screen that will be ok. We turned the corner into a crowded side street and found a parking space waiting for us. We walked to the Cathedral and as we arrived one of my wifes cousins, a novice in the Sisters of Compassion waved us over to share her space on the concrete and the bottom of the steps. As we sat down and prepared for the Mass to begin, a friend waved to me and came over. Come let me take you inside. Feeling madua I declined. He insisted. I declined again. Literally pulling me to my feet he said, Please come. As we walked up the stairs he said to me, I am a Catholic, but whenever I have been to your Church you have always looked after me. Today I will look after you. We were shown in to the Cathedral and led up the aisle... past Archbishop Emeritus casket, to two empty seats at the foot of the sanctuary. Right in front of a photo of the late Archbishop Emeritus. As I sat down and meditated, the words of Father Sulio shared yesterday, when the Methodist Church presented its i reguregu to the Catholic Church, came to mind... Your God is our God, Your body is our body, your life is our life. AMEN.
