This article by NPR struck a nerve with me. For a child with dyslexia, no amount of reading TO them will make them a reader. I wish articles like this, that encourage parents to read to their children, also provided some basic information about dyslexia as up to 1 in 5 people are affected by dyslexia, the most common learning disability. People with dyslexia need explicit, systematic, structured language instruction. They need to be taught the alphabetic principle and need ample amounts of targeted practice to help learn it to automaticity. They will not learn to read by modeling good reading habits. The benefis of reading to kids: ~ helps to make them familiar with books and different genres of writing ~ exposes them to a type of diaglogue that is not a part of normal conversation ~ exposes them to a richer and deeper use of language ~ builds their vocabulary ~exposes them to all sorts of topics ~builds their background knowledge that will aid in comprehension Language, vocabulary, background knowledge are all needed for comprehension, and this is why reading to a child is important because it builds pre-reading skills. But reading to a child will not necessarily make them a reader, and this is especially true for those children with dyslexia. I wish this disclaimer was included in all those articles telling parents to read to their child.
