This article by Times reporter Tyler Kepner is a brilliant second-by-second analysis of Red Sox pitcher Koji Ueharas surprising game-ending pick-off of Cardinals pinch-runner Kolten Wong yesterday. It reminds me of one of the best books on baseball ever written, Men at Work, by George Will. Although Will is a reactionary political pundit, his book offers great insight into the subtleties of baseball strategy. At any given moment, there are dozens of maneuvers happening on the field and in the dugout. Whats remarkable about Ueharas pick off is that it was his idea alone - neither the catcher nor manager had any idea he was going to throw to first. This is the kind of thing that makes baseball so exciting. The so-called slow pace of baseball (compared with football and basketball) is a misnomer. Theres always a lot going on a baseball field if youre in tune with tactics and strategy.
