This article has grown on me a lot. Growing up in a (very) reasonably privileged environment, I have spent a lot of time being exposed to people who thought that they were very unique, when in fact they were not. Its not that they werent smarter than average, whatever that means. Its not that they werent well spoken, or very good at playing clarinet or sacking quarterbacks. Its just that they failed to recognize the scale of their enterprise, and how dangerous it is to delude yourself into the idea that you can ever just coast on your natural ability if you ever want to get really, really good at something. It doesnt happen. Being unique is a product of hard work, extraordinary circumstance (much more extraordinary than being born in America to an upper-middle-class family), and some very specific social skills and ways of thinking. Im not there yet, youre probably not there yet, and honestly, I probably dont know anyone under the age of thirty who is even somewhat close. Keep on working, everyone. Thats how you get where youre looking to go.
