This article is doing the rounds and there seems to be a lot of misconception based purely around the headline! We phoned the District Conservation Officer after a friend of a friend who lives in that area on a farm contacted us in a panic. The DCO - who was very nice by the way - said that there is NO WAY they will be shooting these two elephants. They have an elephant expert there - as you will see if you actually read the article and get past the headline - and they are working with the authorities to repatriate these elephants to Botswana, although its a bit of a process. When we spoke to the DCO yesterday morning, the elephants were apparently very relaxed and calm. They are a young bull with an older elephant. I believe it is a privilege to have wild animals sharing the space with people and I am sorry if the farmers are upset. The elephants actually belong to Botswana and need to be returned to them. No one actually knows why the elephants crossed the river (and dont be a wise guy and say to get to the other side). The DCO is very concerned and they are dong everything by the book. Just hope the farmers relax and dont take matters into their own hands.
