This article is somewhat correct. True, many times the only photo a family had of a loved one was post mortem because of money and/or sudden death BUT they would often have these photos made for informing family. Done in post card fashion, a death could be reported to all family members. Phones were a relatively new invention and snail mail was simply the only way. Photo stands, though, were used for the posing of the living JUST as much as the dead. Standing/sitting still for the long process of 1 photograph could prove difficult for children and young people. One slight move and youre blurred so getting it right the first time was very important. Im not 100% certain that the photo stand photos shown here are post mortem. You would have to closely examine the applied paint over the eyes to confirm that. Most of the time, the paint was applied to the photograph and not the actual deceased.
