This boxwood and ivory clarinet in C was made in Paris between 1857-1867 by the firm of Buthod and Thibouville. Its simple system-fingering features thirteen German silver salt-spoon-style keys. The clarinet was collected by and donated to the National Music Museum by Mitchell Lurie (1922-2008), the well-known former clarinetist with the Cleveland and Chicago Symphonies, later professor emeritus at the University of Southern California. Lurie is also known to clarinetists as the inspiration for Ricos Mitchell Lurie line of clarinet reeds. His performance credits include numerous recordings as well as playing clarinet for the scores of movies such as Dr. Zhivago and Mary Poppins. In fact, Leonard Bernstein once described Lurie as the premier clarinetist in motion picture music and indeed in the world. #clarinet
