This course offers instruction in weight management and exercise to students interested in learning more about weight control. Emphasis is placed on understanding BMI, the problem of obesity, energy balance and being able to distinguish between false claims and fads and healthful dietary patterns, whether they are related to weight loss or weight maintenance. During the course of the semester, we will review current trends and popular diets and try to bust some diet myths along the way. Other topics covered include essential nutrients, eating disorders, and the role of exercise in weight management. As there is an exercise lab component to this course, three (3) hours of exercise are required. Exercise is defined as planned physical activity for the purpose of attaining a health and/or fitness benefit. By the end of the course, you should be able to incorporate the dietary and exercise principles and recommendations into a weight management program designed for someone who needs to lose weight.
