This date in the arts: - Oct. 28, 1467 - Birth of classical scholar Desiderius Erasmus, the most famous and influential humanist of the Northern Renaissance. - Oct. 28, 1893 - Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky conducted his first public performance of his Symphony Number Six in B minor Pathetique. - Oct. 28, 1905 - George Bernard Shaws play Mrs. Warrens Profession, which dealt frankly with prostitution, was performed at the Garrick Theater in New York. The play, Shaws second, had been banned in Britain. After only one performance, puritanical authorities in New York had the play closed. On October 31, the producer and players were arrested for obscenity, but a court case against the play failed to convict playwright, producer, or actors. Although some private productions were held, the show wasnt legally performed in Britain until 1926.
