This defeats the purpose our founders intended that the people function as a part of the system of checks and balances on the branches of the government. Why? "Because a power independent of the society may as well espouse the unjust views of the major, as the rightful interests of the minor party, and may possibly be turned against both parties." (Federalist Paper 51, Alexander Hamilton/James Madison) Congress cannot be allowed to operate "independent of the society." We the people have a right to know what elected representatives intend to do with our tax dollars. We also need to know why all sources of revenue are not open to the wants of the government as our founders intended. (Federalist Paper 12, Hamilton) For example, why no taxing on the movement of money in for example, the $700-trillion-a-year derivatives market? The people have a right to know what their elected officials are thinking and planning. Hamilton/Madison argued, "A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions. This policy of supplying, by opposite and rival interests, the defect of better motives, might be traced through the whole system of human affairs, private as well as public." Secrecy by the Congress is a failure of Congress to control itself. These are not national security issues. This is plain and simple a tax issue and deserves no secrecy.
