This discussion started up on Aarons page, but Im moving it here to keep a different discussion on track. So Aaron, Mary, and anyone else interested- discuss. I honestly believe that the individual automobile is one of the biggest causes of our societal ills. Besides the sprawl and pollution, it also fosters and reinforces our silly notion of Rugged Individualism, our personal isolationism. You know, the belief that we absolutely need our own private everything. Cant take the bus, its not on MY exact schedule, and I might have to interact with people (the horror, THE HORROR). We spend our days rushing from one little box to the next (our houses, our cars, our offices, etc.), and everything is designed to keep us from interacting with each other. Think of restaurants and coffee shops. Everyone sits alone or with their own party, only interacting within their group (and, perfunctorily, the service staff). Why? Because thats the way we do it. But anyone whos ever traveled abroad, or been to a restaurant with European-style seating (like, say, Otis Cafe) will tell you that meeting and visiting with new people over meals was a great experience, a high-light. But we set everything in our worlds up to avoid interacting with people, putting ourselves in little boxes, be they the car, the cubicle, or the little box in our hands that we all stare into all day. Maybe youre even reading this on that box. If so, turn it off and talk to the person next to you! Then, later, come back and- discuss:
