This election was the most expensive midterm in history. It was a deluge of political media buys and candidates who will do little to confront the perversion of free speech in the name of corporate Constitutional rights. We need something different, deeper, and more powerful... so many of the candidates elected are beholden to the same corporate interests as their predecessors. In fact, leading democracy scholars and activists are now calling for a mass social movement to confront the crisis of corporate personhood that is strangling our democracy and perverting our democratic values. Where is this movement, you ask? Take a look in a mirror. It is you. It is us. WE are the movement. From Massachusetts to Ohio, from Illinois to Florida, and Wisconsin, citizens voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to pass a Constitutional amendment calling for an end to the doctrines of corporate Constitutional rights and money as free speech. “Money in politics affects our lives everyday,” said Donna Richards, a Move to Amend volunteer of Fond du Lac, WI who help pass a resolution in her community Tuesday. “We pay too much for healthcare. Our taxes go towards corporate welfare and wars, instead of education and protecting our environment. Our energy policy is dictated by Big Oil, and we can’t even pass reasonable gun background checks because the gun manufacturers have bought half of Congress. This isn’t what democracy looks like.” PLEASE JOIN US: movetoamend.org
