This entire story is upsetting: Who remembers the child bride who poisoned her 35-year-old husband and his guests with rat poison earlier this year? Well, now the prosecutor in the case is saying that if she is found guilty -- Wasila Tasiu has already admitted that she put the rat poison in her husbands rice -- they will pursue the death penalty. Face2Face Africa reports: This week, when Tasiu was reportedly asked if she understood the charges, which were translated in Hausa, she did not respond. The courtroom adjourned to ensure that Tasiu understand the charges. The Guardian reports: The case was adjourned for 30 minutes so the charges could be better explained to the defendant, but when the alleged offences were read again Tasi’u stayed silent, turned her head to the wall and broke down in tears. Nigerians in the South say she should be released; however, those in the North, who observe Islamic law, say she should be held accountable for her actions.
