This essay really struck a chord on the heels of just having watched the film “12 Years a Slave”. To a kid growing up in Montana not really interested in history the North-South Civil War issue was just another question on a history test. Fortunately education is an opportunity for change. On an insignificant personal note in contrast to the profundity of this essay, I am grateful to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr for having influenced the most influential teacher in my life. At the time she was a social worker in Harlem, New York. She met Dr. King who asked her what she was doing for youth. She replied that she was a social worker. Dr. King encouraged her to change careers because educating youth had more impact. Eventually she ended up my French teacher of four years in Montana and influence for life. Universal ideals become great only when they are applied equally to all everywhere without exception.
