This evening I watched the last four episodes of this outstanding fantasy epic. This is one of those series where I was initially dubious about viewing it since the artwork looked too much like a kids show, It was also based on a juvenile fiction series, but considering a number of recommendations I gave it a chance and Im glad I did. While intended for kids, the plot, characters, and setting transcend age. Here is a synopsis that I lifted from someone elses review: Kemono no Souja Erin is based on a series of light novels by Uehashi Nahoko, a name that fans of Seirei no Moribito should recognize. Directed by Hamana Takayuki (Toshokan Sensou, Sisters of Wellber, Chocolate Underground), the anime adaptation, like Seirei no Moribito, follows the plot of the light novels as much as possible. The story is about a 10 year old girl with green eyes called Erin. She lives with her mother Soyon in Ake Village, a place where creatures called Touda (large, lizard-like animals with horns), are bred, reared and cared for. Soyon works as a beastinarian, and is considered by many in the village as the best, and Erin, who is a quick learner and very clever, wants nothing more than to follow in her mothers footsteps. Fate, however, is a cruel mistress. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy tales and any kids interested in becoming a veterinarian, High points for me: The world in which the story takes place, is a fully realized and plausible place, the two types of imaginary animals are depicted in a believable fashion; they are non-magical, have a life-cycle, and distinct behavior, and the characters are also convincing in their motives and actions, Nothing seems inconsistent. I even got used to the fact that the animation was deliberately stylized to mimic a storybook.
