This evening met Marta Harneckar at Presidency College, Kolkata. Discussed in person on various political development in Latin America and Chile. I have heard lot of this sociologists and read some of her articles on rebuilding Left. Though we talked much on Left ideology but felt slightly disappointed on discovering some of her ideas align with the European Social Democrats, a kind of Democrat-Left or so to say her stress on Participative Democracy by all sects of people without acknowledging the inherent implication of Class in such society. I have never heard for a single time any reference on Marx except small reference on Lenin. Somehow she was not very much open on my insistence to discuss classical Marxism and its relevance in 21st Century. Marta is well known to International intellectual communities for her vast experience right from 68 May event when she was in Paris. Strangely her visit along with her companion ( or Husband ?) Martin in Kolkata was only known to few set of people and it proves once again that Kolkata has lost its pride completely as intellectual hub of this country and particularly in the wake of change of the last State Govt !
